Incheon: KAL Lounge / KE Lounge (Foreign Airlines), Terminal 1

Incheon: KAL Lounge / KE Lounge (Foreign Airlines), Terminal 1

Once I cleared immigration in Terminal 1 at Incheon International Airport, I immediately ran into a problem: I couldn't find my lounge. Nothing I saw matched what was printed on my boarding pass.

MIAT Airlines boarding pass with KAL Lounge invitation

After wandering around for a few minutes, I finally pulled up one of the airport's interactive maps and discovered the issue. While my boarding pass listed the lounge as the KAL Lounge, the airport map identified it as the KE Lounge (Foreign Airlines).

Finding it after that was a little easier, though not entirely straightforward. Most descriptions simply say it's located near Gate 28, but you'll need to continue past Gate 28 and walk through part of the shopping area. Eventually, you'll spot the lounge signage near the Starbucks and directly across from the oneWorld Lounge entrance. (If you’re coming out of Immigration 4, you’re right there!)

First Impressions

Plenty of seating in this lounge!

Knowing that Korean Air has moved its operations to Terminal 2 and this lounge is primarily for foreign airlines, I realized this lounge probably doesn't see nearly the amount of traffic it once did.

During my visit, there were fewer than ten people coming and going the entire time I was there. The result was one of the quietest airport lounge experiences I've had at Incheon.

In terms of size, I'd compare it closely to the Asiana Lounge in Terminal 1. Neither are very large, but the space here feels open and spacious thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows, abundant natural light, and a thoughtful layout that breaks the lounge into several different seating zones.

The lounge was also exceptionally clean. Every seating area looked well-maintained, and everything felt fresh and inviting. They leaned heavily into red, gray and white color scheme, with the red breaking up seating areas visually.

Seating and Atmosphere

Banquet style seating at KAL Lounge

The seating design is one of the lounge's strongest features.

Most seats are positioned facing windows looking out at the aircraft with plenty of natural light. There are also interior seating sections that face into the terminal for travelers who prefer a little more privacy from the windows.

Seating by large windows in KAL Lounge

I appreciated the variety of seating options available. Whether you wanted to work, relax, enjoy a meal, or simply watch aircraft movements outside, there was a dedicated area that suited the purpose.

The only issue I encountered was that the charging port at the first seat I selected wasn't functioning. Fortunately, with so many empty seats available, finding another spot wasn't difficult.

This lounge was incredibly peaceful. Between the low passenger count, soft ambient noise, and bright open design, it was a genuinely relaxing place to spend a few hours before boarding.

Food and Drinks

A bowl of chicken stew at KAL Lounge

The food selection was relatively small compared to some of the larger international lounges at Incheon, however, it was fitting for the size of the lounge.

That said, what was available was surprisingly good. There was a chicken stew that I liked it so much that I went back for three bowls. Someone at Korean Air - please send me the recipe.

While the food buffet wasn't extensive, everything appeared fresh and regularly replenished. One thing that I regularly think Korean Air - and Korea, in general - fails at, is a salad bar. You’ll be lucky to find more than lettuce and tomatoes on a Korean salad bar. So much room to improve here.

The beverage selection was considerably larger than the food selection, with a variety of soft drinks, coffee, beer, wine, and spirits available throughout the day.

Amenities

Bathroom and Mother’s Room hallway at KAL Lounge - also can we talk about these walls?!

Beyond the seating and dining areas, the lounge includes several useful amenities for travelers.

Families traveling with infants will appreciate the dedicated mother's room, while standard restroom facilities are located inside the lounge itself.

For travelers wanting to freshen up before a long flight, two shower rooms are available. Access requires a key from the front desk, so you'll need to check with the lounge staff before using them.

There’s also a meeting room and a printer if you need a closed off space to work.

Seating in the dining area of KAL Lounge, Terminal 1 Incheon Airport

The KAL Lounge in Terminal 1 feels a bit like a hidden remnant of Korean Air's pre-Terminal 2 era. It's not the largest lounge at Incheon, and the food selection is fairly limited, but it excels in several areas that matter most: cleanliness, comfort, natural light, and tranquility.

With so few passengers using the lounge during my visit, it felt more like a private waiting area than an airport lounge with comfortable seating, excellent views, shower facilities, and surprisingly good food.

Now, if only someone could go and properly redesign the Serendib Lounge at CMB - it has the potential to feel like this.
