Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB): Serendib Lounge

Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB): Serendib Lounge

According to Srilankan Airlines website, the Serendib Lounge is “situated in a picturesque location overlooking the Aircraft Parking Bay on the first floor of the departure hall” and I’ll give them that - at sunset, you have a great view.

As SriLankan Airlines’ flagship lounge specifically for Business Class passengers at its home airport, I expected a comfortable space that reflected their brand. Instead, the lounge felt dark, outdated, and oddly pieced together — functional enough for a short stop, but nowhere near the level of lounges we’ve visited elsewhere.

That said, if you have lounge access included with your ticket, you might find it worth stepping inside for a snack, shower, or quieter place to wait before boarding.

First Impressions

My first impression was the entrance to the lounge and I did absolutely love the wood door with the gold details. However, once inside, the lounge immediately felt dated — and not in a charming, nostalgic airline-lounge kind of way. The interior was dark and the entire space lacked the cozy atmosphere you hope for before a long-haul flight.

The leather chairs felt cheap and tired, like something picked up from a discount warehouse sometime in the late 90s and never updated afterward. Rather than feeling like a premium international lounge, it honestly reminded me of an aging business center waiting room.

Given that this is SriLankan Airlines’ flagship lounge at its home airport, I expected a more polished overall experience. I can’t imagine that an actual interior designer was hired for this spot.

Location

The Serendib Lounge is located airside in Terminal 1 after immigration and security near the departure gates and duty free shopping area.

The location itself is convenient and easy to find once inside the international departures area, making it a simple stop before boarding. However, don’t the oneworld signage fool you - this lounge is specifically for business class passengers on Sri Lankan Airlines.

Seating & Layout

The lounge is full of seating areas with dining tables, lounge chairs, and a quiet zone, but the overall layout never really translated into comfort.

I think one of the biggest issues was simply how much furniture had been squeezed into the space. Particularly around the dining area, tables felt packed tightly together, making the lounge feel cramped rather than open and relaxing.

Instead of creating calm, breathable seating areas, it felt like every available corner had been filled with extra chairs or tables whether they were needed or not.

The darker interiors didn’t help either. Combined with the aging furniture, the entire lounge felt heavier and more closed-in than most modern airport lounges. There were comfortable enough places to sit for a short visit, but nothing about the lounge encouraged us to fully settle in and relax before our flight.

Food & Drinks

The food selection itself was fairly limited, though I’ve certainly seen smaller spreads in other airport lounges. The offerings were heavily Asian-inspired on the hot food bar with sandwiches, crackers and some vegetables on the cold food car.

I would have loved to see pani pol for one final taste of the country before boarding, but the fruit and cold food was distinctly more western.

That said, even with the smaller selection, my picky kids were able to find fruit and desserts they enjoyed, which was plenty as they had recently eaten and they would be getting a meal on board the plane anyway.

There was also a bartender working behind the bar pouring alcoholic drinks throughout our visit. However, the placement of the bar itself felt randomly situated in the eating area. The lounge didn’t feel thoughtfully designed so much as slowly assembled over time.

Amenities

Behind me was a large bathroom as well. Both of my daughters and I were able to stand in here without feeling cramped.

Inside each bathroom, you’ll find one individual shower room, and unlike many airport lounges, you don’t need to visit the front desk or request a key to use it. That was simple and convenient.

Upon check-in the front desk staff also explained that they would periodically walk through the lounge announcing boarding calls for departing flights which is something a lot of lounges don’t do anymore. And during our visit, we heard staff walking through the lounge announcing boarding calls for several other flights before ours. So many flights left that it was just our family of 4, and 2 other Korean couples inside the lounge.

Now, one thing about me is that I never fully rely on someone else to get me where I need to be. When we’re traveling, I’m constantly watching the time and mentally tracking how close we are to boarding, so when our flight should have started boarding, we were already packing up to head out.

The moment we stepped into the hallway, we were greeted by “FINAL BOARDING CALL” flashing beside our flight number on the departure screens. Cue all 4 of us running through the airport.

To make things even more stressful, our gate required an additional security screening, and staff were getting ready to close things down as we rushed over. We barely made it through before the checkpoint wrapped up. Maybe two minutes after we made it through the security screening, they opened the plane doors and officially started boarding the flight.

In addition to the main seating areas, there was also a separate quiet room tucked beside the food area near the main entrance. The space was dimly lit with blue lighting and filled with oversized leather recliners clearly meant for travelers trying to rest between flights.

Despite some of my complaints about the lounge overall, noise was never really one of them.

The lounge stayed surprisingly quiet throughout our visit, so maybe we simply visited during a less crowded period, but the atmosphere itself remained fairly calm and subdued the entire time we were there.

One last thing on amenities - there were no charging ports or plugs that we could find. We continued to use our battery packs as chargers while in here.

Would I Pay For Access?

No. Solid no.

Not because airport lounges need to be extravagant, but because Colombo Airport itself actually has a decent amount of shopping and eateries to keep travelers occupied outside the lounge.

If this had been a beautiful space with standout food, comfortable seating, or memorable amenities, maybe it would feel worth paying for, but compared to other lounges we’ve visited, this one simply fell short.

If access comes included with your ticket or airline status, it’s perfectly fine for grabbing a snack, taking a shower, or escaping the terminal noise for a bit. But if I had to pay separately for access? I’d skip it and spend my time exploring the airport instead.
