Sri Lankan Airlines Economy Review: A330 Seoul (ICN) to Colombo (CMB)

Sri Lankan Airlines Economy Review: A330 Seoul (ICN) to Colombo (CMB)

As someone who is always looking for an opportunity to fly a new airline, I was excited to book SriLankan Airlines for our spring break trip to Sri Lanka. At the time of our travels, SriLankan Airlines was the only carrier offering a direct flight from Seoul Incheon (ICN) to Colombo (CMB), making it the most convenient option for reaching the island nation.

Since this daytime flight on the Airbus A330 was scheduled for just under eight hours, we decided to save money and book economy class for the journey to Colombo. After spending most of my recent long-haul flights in business class, the economy cabin naturally felt a bit tighter than what I had grown accustomed to. That said, the comfortable 2-4-2 seating layout, friendly service, and overall onboard experience exceeded my expectations. From boarding in Seoul to landing in Colombo, SriLankan Airlines delivered a pleasant and surprisingly enjoyable economy-class experience.

Flight Overview

  • Airline: SriLankan Airlines

  • Cabin: Economy Class

  • Aircraft: Airbus A330-300

  • Seat Configuration: 2-4-2

  • Route: Incheon International Airport (ICN) → Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)

  • Flight Time: ~8 hours

  • Traveling With: Husband + 2 kids

First Impressions

Funny enough, this flight was boarded from back to front and when they announced this, it caused mass confusion in the boarding area, which made me chuckle. Other than that, boarding felt fairly straightforward, and the cabin immediately stood out thanks to SriLankan’s signature turquoise seats. I prefer airlines sticking to neutral colors, rather than their signature colors, but it gave the aircraft a distinctive personality.

Waiting at each seat were a blanket, pillow, and a set of headphones, small touches that helped make the cabin feel prepared for a true long-haul flight. Having those items already in place made settling in much easier.

The cabin itself felt surprisingly spacious compared to many modern widebody aircraft. One of the biggest reasons for that is SriLankan’s decision to maintain a 2-4-2 economy layout on the A330 rather than the denser 3-3-3 configurations now common on many airlines.

The Seats

I would’ve preferred 2 rows of 2 seats, but we were seated in the center block of four seats. The middle section still felt comfortable and practical for traveling together.

With only two seats along each window, nobody is more than one seat away from the aisle in those sections. Even in the middle four, the cabin felt less cramped than anticipated. Seat configuration can make a huge difference, even when the actual seat dimensions are fairly standard.

The seats featured adjustable headrests, seatback entertainment screens, and standard economy recline. The seats, the aisle, the fabric - everything felt and looked clean on board as well.

Amenities

At each seat, passengers received a pillow, blanket, and complimentary headphones before departure. There were, no surprise, no amenity kits or premium extras in economy. I thought the blanket was surprisingly cozy however at the end of the flight they announced they would be coming around to pick up the blankets from each passenger. I’ve never heard an airline do this and it made me laugh.

The A330 is equipped with personal entertainment screens throughout the economy cabin, giving each passenger access to on-demand movies, television shows, music, and flight information during the journey. The flight map and on board menu screens never worked for me, though.

During the flight, the flight attendants brought around small activity kits for the girls.

Food & Drinks

This was a noon flight for us and we had a lunch meal as well as a snack later on. I am always willing to try airplane food, and I thought the chicken was flavorful, without being too spicy. It was served with a Cole slaw and a carrot cake for dessert.

Sandwiches served during snack time on board SriLankan Airlines A330

When it came to snack time, we were served 3 small sandwiches - turkey and cheese, tomato and cucumber (swathed in mayo), and tuna. I don’t like mayonnaise and it was difficult to wipe away, so I stuck to the tuna. Between the three, there’s an option for almost anyone. More surprising than the food, though, was that we were given actual metal utensils to use instead of plastic.

Cabin crew were friendly throughout the flight, regularly moving through the cabin with beverage service and checking on passengers during the journey. While SriLankan may not have the same reputation or resources as some of the larger Gulf carriers, service felt warm and welcoming.

Is It Worth It?

For a nearly eight-hour flight, SriLankan Airlines delivered a solid economy-class experience. Roundtrip, these tickets cost just over $2,000 for our family of 4 and for what would be 16 hours of flight time roundtrip, I’d say it was a great option. The turquoise cabin gives the aircraft a unique look and the 2-4-2 seating configuration remains a major advantage in an era of increasingly dense economy cabins.

While it may not offer the premium touches of larger international carriers, the overall experience felt comfortable, practical, and family-friendly. For travelers flying between South Korea and Sri Lanka, the direct route combined with the spacious A330 cabin makes this a very reasonable way to make the journey. Sri Lankan is the only airlines to fly direct from Seoul to Colombo, and vice versa, and I’d be up to fly with them again!

If you're planning a trip to Sri Lanka, this direct flight from Seoul makes an easy gateway to exploring the country. After arriving in Colombo, we continued our journey with a domestic flight on Cinnamon Air, stayed at several memorable hotels, and experienced one of the highlights of the trip—a safari in Yala National Park.
